BASICALLY: U is in jail. Some guy in uniform flanked by two goons comes in and mocks him, to which U just kind of snarks back. The next cell is filled with monsters being loud and obnoxious and shouting about pudding and stuff.
Then a guy in a suit waltzes weirdly onto the scene, petitions to have the monsters released because they helped save the world a bunch, but the TIME POLICE say no, in fact suit man is under arrest also.
Then U goes NO I REPENT I'LL NEVER STEAL AGAIN I PROMISE, gets pistolwhipped, and then while the monsters in the next cell are celebrating that he got pistolwhipped he stands up, revealing that he used that NEVER STEAL AGAIN scene as a distraction to steal the keys.
The monsters ask U to let them out too, and he trolls them a bit before spinning the keys on his finger and tossing them backwards over his shoulder, towards their cell.
[ U is very young in this memory, and he's holding the hand of an older boy, trotting to keep up with the older boy's longer stride. They both appear content - nothing is particularly amiss around them, it would seem.
They're walking down the street of a small town in what might be rural Japan? But like, rural modern, not rural samurai-era or anything. Every building is helpfully labeled with a sign, so nobody can get lost!
In a small cafe that they pass, a man is talking quietly with a young woman, a waitress at the cafe. Their conversation seems normal - you can't hear what it is at all, though her expression becomes more and more strained the longer he talks to her, and she raises her voice more each time.
Finally she snaps— it's not violent, or anything, just a bit rude. She drops her smile, throws up her hands in exasperation and snaps at him. It doesn't matter how many times you ask what the ingredients are, the answer isn't going to change! Are you going to order it or not? — and even as it comes out of her mouth her eyes go wide. Not in embarrassment, though. She looks terrified.
The man she was arguing with recoils, also looking terrified. He doesn't say anything.
(By this point, U, the older boy, and several people walking past have all stopped, like they're watching a car crash in slow motion.)
The waitress starts to apologize, she says she didn't mean it, she had a rough day, of course she didn't mean it, she's so sorry, please she's so sorry—
The older boy (his brother) pulls U close, covers his eyes. The video feed, correspondingly, cuts out. And the audio feed is extremely alarming. The woman screams, tries to apologize again, screams more, and then is silent.
When U looks up the woman is gone. Everyone has gone back to business as usual as though the incident never happened, but there's something awfully forced about it. (U's brother) starts walking again, faster this time, and U has to run to catch up. ]
